As a young adult, he was admitted to a training school that taught deaf people how to play chess. He was admitted to the hospital to be treated for tuberculosis, but he eventually recovered after playing chess for four years.
He retired from chess in 1950 at the age of 32, having won nine championships in nine different countries.
He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1956.
His autobiography, My 60 Years With the Queen, was published in 2000.
His autobiography was very well received, earning him a Pulitzer Prize in 2001.
He died at the age of 67 in 1992.
