Consultants at the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence have amassed a database of more than 500,000 of these individuals, as well as a database of about 100,000 ‘ordinary’ users. The team was originally looking for patterns in the collective intelligence scores of the users and the corresponding scores of their friends and relatives. But by taking a closer look at the individual personalities of the users, the team found a link between personality types and their collective intelligence.
“We found that people who score high on one personality dimension tend to score high on another, and that these two scores are positively correlated,” says Adriana Galindo-Gonzalez, an MIT graduate student in computer science and a co-author of a paper describing the research.
“People who score highly on agreeableness tend to score highly on conscientiousness and vice versa. People who score highly on openness tend to score highly on extraversion and vice versa.”
Taken together, the findings suggest that the different facets of personality are related to different aspects of intelligence.
