I broke into the brewing business by accident, when I was in my twenties. I was at a party, and an older gentleman came up to me and asked me if I knew how to brew. I was clueless. He told me he was having a party the next day, and if I could help him brew something, he would pay me. I was intrigued, so I did the best I could to follow his instructions. He was clearly an experienced brewer, because he made a really good beer. The next day, I showed up to the party, and he gave me a hundred dollars. From that day forward, I decided brewing was something I wanted to do.
When I started homebrewing, I was much more familiar with cooking than brewing. Even though I had tried making beer before, it was not my primary passion. But I also knew very little about cooking. As a result, I found myself doing all the research myself. It took much longer than I anticipated to figure out how to cook, but I eventually became quite proficient at it.
