Bobby Munson personality type is INTP, so it’s no wonder that his constant experiments with various “experimental” novels have resulted in a literary identity disorder. His writing style is a breathless series of descriptions and observations, with a dash of philosophical musings, but with a very obvious weakness – he simply can’t seem to pull it all together into a cohesive novel.
In the first chapter, we run into a very Sam Spade-like character, as Bobby goes to the wrong house and gets into a fistfight with a guy who likes to collect guns and who is very much like the character he created, Joe Gunther. Gunther recognizes Bobby as the guy who wrote Gunther, and decides to tell him some tales about Gunther’s childhood, which he describes as a series of “lonely and isolated and hopeless and violent and pathetic and sad and pointless and purposeless and meaningless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless and pointless…”
Bobby is not having it.
He also determines that Gunther is “…probably the worst person I’ve ever met in my life.”
