Ferdinand I was born in Sinaia, Romania on April 24, 1914, the first son of Prince Carol, the future King of Romania. His younger brother, Michael, followed him as King of Romania. Ferdinand was educated by private tutors, and was brought up to be a devout Orthodox Christian. He was also interested in sports, especially track-and-field. He displayed his athletic ability during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where he won a gold medal in the shot put.
After the death of his father in 1940, he became king of Romania on the death of his brother Michael. At first, he was reluctant to assume the crown, but eventually acceded to it. Michael had been forced to abdicate by the Axis Powers, who occupied Romania during World War II. Ferdinand was determined to see his country free of domination by the Germans.
Ferdinand I (Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad; 24 August 1865 – 20 July 1927), nicknamed Întregitorul ("the Unifier"), was King of Romania from 1914 until 1927. Although a member of Germany's ruling Hohenzollern imperial family, Ferdinand sided against the Central Powers in World War I. Thus, at the war’s end, Romania was on the winning side and was enlarged by annexation of the territories where Romanians were the majority of the population but had been occupied by the neighbouring empires: Bassarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania. Ferdinand was crowned king of "Greater Romania" in 1922. He died from cancer in 1927, succeeded by his underage grandson Michael under a regency.
