She grew up in the Creeting St. Mary’s area of Suffolk, where she attended Hollesley Primary School and then went on to Scolegate Secondary Technical School. She graduated in 1970, and then went on to do an English degree at the University of Hull before taking a job with a hotel management company.
In 1976, Sophie Aldred was married for the first time to an Englishman named John Aldred. The couple had a daughter named Caroline. In 1978, she met the actor Nicholas Courtney, and they married in 1981. In 1984, they had a son named David. In 1986, she divorced her husband after he left her for a younger woman. In 1988, Sophie Aldred married the actor Geoffrey Bayldon, and they remained married until his death in 2011. Her son David has Down syndrome.
