Sergio Aragonés was born in Madrid, Spain, on February 6, 1944. His father was an artist and his mother was a nurse. He had an older brother who was murdered when Sergio was seven years old, and he also had two sisters.
Sergio attended the University of Madrid where he studied law for three years before turning to art. Aragonés combined his interest in painting with his love for drawing comic strips. He started out by creating his own comics—“El Chavo del Ocho” was probably the first—but he also worked on some very famous characters, including El Chavo del Ocho, Lupin, Skeleton Man, The Phantom, Tarzán, and Superman.
