Kaneshiro was born in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. He is a second generation Japanese-American who is the son of a Japanese father and an American mother. He has an older brother from his father's previous marriage. Kaneshiro's family moved around a lot because of his father's job as a government worker, but they settled in Pasadena, California, where his father accepted a job with NASA. In high school, he played soccer and baseball. He was passionate about soccer and wanted to play in the National Soccer League for the UCLA Bruins, but his mother refused to let him because they didn't have a phone at their house.
After high school, Kaneshiro studied English literature at the University of California, Riverside, where he majored in print journalism. He joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, but dropped out of college after two years. He found his true calling as a reporter for "The Daily Bruin", a student newspaper at UCLA.
