I think the word “planner” is used in a lot of different ways in the MBTI world, but when I use it with ENTPs, I think of them as someone who is good at setting goals, making lists, setting priorities and organizing their time and attention. It’s not to say that ENTPs don’t enjoy the moment; they do enjoy the moment and they do take action (they’re very action-oriented!), but they like to take action based on a plan.
I think this leads them into some interesting situations because ENTPs need to be organized to be effective at their job, but also need to be able to improvise to meet unexpected situations. They need to be organized and prepared and prepared and organized and prepared and prepared and …. and who knows what I’m talking about, so let’s just move on.
There are many kinds of planners, though, and I think ENTPs can be pretty adaptive to different kinds of schedules and structures. They’re good problem-solvers and can function well as managers.
