    Ibn Al-Haytham was born in 965 C.E. in the town of Basra, Iraq into a family that was well known for its scientific achievements. In his youth, Ibn Al-Haytham traveled to Egypt, where he studied mathematics and astronomy at the famed House of Wisdom under the supervision of Al-Fadl. During his time in Egypt, he became a student of Al-Fazl and made many important contributions to mathematics, astronomy and optics.

    Alhazen is one of history’s greatest scientists whose interests extended beyond astronomy and mathematics to include medicine, theology, ethics and political theory. He wrote a number of works on each of these fields and his works were used by scholars for many centuries after his death. In addition to his scientific achievements, Alhazen is also known as a highly skilled physician. He was also a noted poet who wrote poems in Arabic, Persian and Hebrew.

    In his later years, Ibn Al-Haytham lived in Damascus where he was considered a major authority on the Qur’an and Islamic law.
