    Cesare Mansueto Giulio Lattes, also known as César Lattes (Curitiba, 11 July 1924 — Campinas, 8 March 2005), was a Brazilian physicist, co-discoverer of the π-meson (pi or pion meson), a discovery that led to the concession from the 1950 Nobel Prize in Physics to Cecil Frank Powell, research leader. Lattes is one of the most distinguished physicists in Brazil and his work was fundamental for the development of atomic physics in the country. He was also a great leader in the Brazilian scientific community and one of the main people responsible for the creation of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
