After graduating, he spent two years as an assistant professor of astronomy at the University of Illinois.
He then joined the U.S. Naval Observatory as an astronomer, working on the precision measurement of stellar positions and cataloguing variable stars.
He became involved in the search for extrasolar planets (planetary companions) and, in 1960, he discovered Pluto, the ninth planet in the solar system.
He retired from his position at the U.S. Naval Observatory in 1973.
He died of heart failure in 1997.
