Langevin, who was a politician and a statesman, and who was President of the French Chamber of Deputies and later of the Senate, was a leading figure in the French Chamber of Deputies for almost sixty years. He was one of the "Fourteen" who drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in France in 1789, and he served as President of the Senate from 1867 until his death in 1890. His personal motto was "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". He is buried in the Panthéon.
While he was not a visionary like the other three "founding fathers", he was a shrewd and pragmatic politician and played an important role in the establishment of the Third Republic. He is said to have coined the phrase "national defence" and was noted for his moderation and for his "ingenuousness".
