    François de La Rochefoucauld
    INFP

    INFP (4w5)

François de La Rochefoucauld personality type is INFP, and I’ve recently been rereading about him and his work.

La Rochefoucauld has a bit of a reputation as a “ladies man” as well as an “old fogey” with a distaste for new trends and fashions. His name is synonymous with the French literary movement of the 1750s and 60s known as the “Spirit of the Eighteenth Century” (le goût de l’ancien temps).

His book, La Rochefoucauld-Liancour, is a collection of maxims and aphorisms. Some of the best-known ones are:

“Man is a creature who makes himself that which he is not”

“There is nothing that does not bear to be seen, and even if it were only the slightest thing it would bear to be seen. I would never have understood that if I had not experienced it myself.”

“The greatest misfortune is never to have known what one does not know.”

François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld, Prince de Marcillac was a noted French moralist and author of maxims and memoirs. He is part of the literary movement of classicism and best known for his maxims. Although he only officially published his Memoirs and his Maxims, his literary production is dense.
