    Ibsen was born into a wealthy family in Norway in 1828. His father was a pastor and his mother was a highly regarded intellectual. As a child, Ibsen was very well-read and had a wide-ranging knowledge of literature and philosophy. When he was 12 years old, he read the autobiography of the French Revolution and became fascinated by the idea of a revolution.

    As a young adult, Ibsen became a follower of a popular movement called ‘Hegelianism’, which taught that there were superior and inferior races and moral truths for which reason was no longer enough.

As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and one of the most influential playwrights of his time. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Ghosts, The Wild Duck, When We Dead Awaken, Rosmersholm, and The Master Builder. He is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006
