    In her autobiography, Halide Edip describes herself as a nurturer and a fixer, someone who is always trying to keep her family and friends together. She describes her childhood as difficult, with her father's frequent absence to fight in the Turkish War of Independence. She writes that she became self-sufficient at an early age, and was extremely popular in school, making friends easily.

    At the time of the Armenian Genocide in 1915, Halide Edip Adıvar was eleven years old. The genocide that she witnessed in her home village left deep emotional scars. She later recalled that when she saw people being killed, she wanted to run away, but found that she could not move. The Turkish authorities threatened her family with death if she did not reveal where her father was. When they found out where he was, they told Halide's father to come home. However, after seeing the bodies of so many people he had known, he refused to return.

    Halide Edip Adıvar went on to study medicine at Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon, Turkey, graduating in 1939.

    Halide Edib Adıvar (Ottoman Turkish: خالده اديب‎ [haːliˈde eˈdib]; sometimes spelled Halidé Edib in English) (11 June 1884 – 9 January 1964) was a Turkish novelist, nationalist, and political leader for women's rights. She was best known for her novels criticizing the low social status of Turkish women and what she saw as the lack of interest of most women in changing their situation. During World War I, Halide Edib ran an orphanage at the former Saint Joseph College in Antoura for Armenian orphans. She was a Pan-Turkist and several of her novels promoted Turanism.
