Tertullian was a very influential writer in the early Christian Church. He was well-read, and had a wide range of interests. Tertullian was interested in philosophy and pagan religion, although he expressed his views as a Christian. His writings show that he had a thorough knowledge of the Greek philosophers, Platonism, Stoicism, Judaism and Christianity. Tertullian was also interested in science and medicine. He wrote on botany, zoology, geography and astronomy. He also wrote on many practical matters such as veterinary medicine, law and ethics.
Tertullian has been called “the most voluminous of all the Christian writers excepting St. Paul” because of his many works. He produced sixteen volumes of theological treatises and five volumes of biblical commentaries.
