    The Life of William Shakespeare

    Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He was the second son of John Shakespeare, a glover or leather merchant. His mother Mary Arden also held a job as a glove maker, which was a common occupation for women in that era.

    Shakespeare’s parents died around 1587, around the same time that Shakespeare’s son was born. Shakespeare’s elder brother was also named William.

    At the tender age of eight, Shakespeare moved to London, where he began his schooling at St. Olave’s Grammar School.

    William Shakespeare ( SHAYK-speer; 26 April 1564 (baptised) – 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as both the greatest writer in the English language, and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon".
