The father was a very stern man, and had the reputation of being a very good judge. He was a religious man; he always wore a cap on his head and always kept himself covered. He did not go out of the house. There was no such thing as a barber within a day’s journey of him, for he was always shaving himself. He would not allow his beard to grow. He was a man who had never indulged in wine or strong drink, and was entirely self-controlled. He was very strict with us children, but very kind with his wife. He would treat her with great respect, for she was a very beautiful woman.

The mother was much gentler than the father, and much more benevolent. She would allow us much more liberty than our father would. She would listen to our stories, and laugh at them, and talk to us about our lessons. She would never be angry because we were naughty, but would laugh at us if we were naughty. She was very helpful to us girls in learning to read the Koran, teaching us how to do so.

Al-Maqrīzī or Makrīzī (Arabic: المقريزي), he was Taqī al-Dīn Abū al-'Abbās Aḥmad ibn 'Alī ibn 'Abd al-Qādir ibn Muḥammad al-Maqrīzī (1364–1442) was a prominent medieval Egyptian historian during the Mamluk-era, remarkable in this context for his unusually keen interest in the Isma'ili Fatimid dynasty and its role in Egyptian history."Maqrizi studied theology under one of the primary masterminds behind the Zahiri Revolt, and his vocal support and sympathy with that revolt against the Mamluks likely cost him higher administrative and clerical positions with the Mamluk regime. Most of Al-Maqrizi's works, exceeding 200, are concerned with Egypt.
