Müteferrika was born in Istanbul, Ottoman Empire, now Turkey. He is the son of a wealthy and powerful "hassan", a civil servant. His mother was a Circassian slave, who died when he was 6 years old. His father married another Circassian woman, after the death of his first wife. Although he was not adopted by his stepmother, he did not have an easy childhood. He was beaten by his stepmother, who did not accept his Circassian origins.
At the age of 16, he travelled to Damascus. There, he studied at the College of "Al-Jami'a". Although he was not very good at studies, he was an excellent athlete. He took part in several sports competitions there, including the Olympic Games. He was also the owner of a large library, which contained many books on Islam, Greek philosophy and other subjects. He also helped to establish a library in Constantinople.
