    Clarence Birdseye was an American humorist, cartoonist, and writer known for his insight into the nature of technological progress in his daily newspaper comic strip. The strip was called "The Little King", and it appeared in the New York Herald in 1906, when Birdseye was in his early twenties.

    His biography "The Life of Clarence Birdseye" by Thomas E. Gullotta (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1940) is an important source for his life and work.

    Birdseye was born to George Birdseye and Eliza Ann (née McDevitt) Birdseye on November 26, 1876 in South Berwick, Maine, where he attended school. His family moved to West Troy, New York when he was six years old. At age fourteen, he began working at his father's newspaper, the Troy Evening Press. He began contributing his humorous "Little King" cartoons to the newspaper at age sixteen.
