Jiro Horikoshi personality type is INTP, the most common type in the world. He was born in 1914, and made his first plane flight in 1932. He died in 1998, at age 86. (At least, he may have died in 1998, the day I typed the above paragraph.)
Many people know Horikoshi as the designer of the A6M, the renowned Zero fighter plane. Others know him as the designer of the Ki-84 Hayate. But Horikoshi is probably best-known as the designer of Japan’s first mass-produced warplane, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane. He worked on the A6M at Mitsubishi’s Nagoya plant, where he was head engineer.
The A6M was a very good airplane, and it became Japan’s ace fighter plane. But at the time, Japan’s military leaders didn’t think much of the Zero, because it was so much better than its American counterparts.
Then, in late 1941, the Japanese Navy commissioned an all-new fighter plane to replace the Zero. Horikoshi was chosen to design it.
Jiro Horikoshi (堀越 二郎, Horikoshi Jirō, 22 June 1903 – 11 January 1982) was the chief engineer of many Japanese fighter designs of World War II, including the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter. Horikoshi is the subject of The Wind Rises, a fictionalized biographical animated film by Hayao Miyazaki.
