Marcellin Berthelot [1] (Paris, 25 October 1827 - Paris, 18 March 1907) was a French chemist, physico-chemist, biologist, epistemologist and politician. Following his participation in the 1870 war effort against Germany, he was elected senator, then appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Public Instruction. In politics, he is known to have supported the effort to invest in new technologies and to help the peasant and working class populations. He was also interested in philosophy and the history of science in the East.
