Dmitri Iossifovitch Ivanovski (Russian: Дмитрий Иосифович Ивановский), born November 9, 1864 and died April 20, 1920 in Rostov-on-Don, was a Russian biologist and botanist. By highlighting the properties of the tobacco mosaic virus, he is in some ways the first to discover viruses (1892). He showed that the sap of diseased tobacco plants contained an infectious agent that was not retained by the Chamberland filter. Ivanovski thought at the time that it was a toxin or a very small bacterium.
