Favaloro was born in Buenos Aires on 31 August 1932. In 1952 he entered the University of Buenos Aires, where he received a degree in medicine in 1956. He trained at the National Institute of Aesthetics (1956–1957) and at the National Institute of Neurology (1957–1959). In 1959 he earned an MD from the University of Buenos Aires and a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Buenos Aires in 1970.
