I think it’s telling that the ISTP personality type, which is more outwardly focused, was better at getting the kids to talk while the ISTJ personality type, which is more inwardly focused, was better at getting the parents to open up.
I do wonder what the effects of the story were on the kids. Since I’m an ISTP myself, I can certainly relate to the other two personalities in the book. I know how difficult it is to have an ISTP friend who’s more into outer things like sports or computers than getting together to talk or play games. On the other hand, I’ve also had an ISTJ friend who’d rather spend her time alone than play games with me.
The point is, maybe there are some kids who might be inspired by these fictional characters to open up with their parents. Or maybe it’s like picking up a book like Dr. Seuss’s Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and finding yourself relating to one of the characters.
