According to legend, Alvin was a young man from a small town in northern France. He was a charismatic young man who seemed to be able to charm everyone he met, including the local priest.
One day, despite his protestations of innocence, Alvin was accused of murder and sent to be convicted and executed. He was taken to the gallows on a cart and prepared to be hanged while he was still under duress.
Just before the cart carrying the condemned man was set in motion, Alvin shouted: “I am innocent! You cannot hang me!”
The cart then stopped and the hangman asked: “Who spoke?”
Alvin replied: “It was I, but I did not say anything.”
