In college she majored in Spanish and minored in literature. She met her future husband, John, at school. They were married when she was 21 and he was 22. They moved to a small town in West Virginia, where they were both happy and contented. She took care of the house and raised their two children while he worked at the local power plant. The couple seemed happy and in love. They had a small circle of friends and neighbors who considered them a model family. In fact, they never suspected that Lorena had a problem with anger until it was too late.
In the early morning hours of June 24, 1993, Lorena's life changed forever. The couple was awakened by loud noises in their home. John heard two loud knocks at the front door, followed by the sound of someone trying to force it open. He unlocked the door and turned on the porch light.
Lorena cut off her husband's penis with a knife while he was asleep in bed. The penis was subsequently surgically reattached. Years after the incident, John was convicted of beating two other women and of theft. The incident occurred June 23, 1993 in Manassas, Virginia. Lorena Bobbitt stated in a court hearing that, after coming home that evening, her husband raped her. After he then went to sleep, she got out of bed and went to the kitchen for a drink of water. She then grabbed an eight-inch carving knife on the kitchen counter, returned to their bedroom, pulled back the bed-sheets and cut off his penis. After this, she left the apartment with the severed appendage and drove away in her car. After a while driving and struggling to steer with one hand, she threw it out the window into a roadside field.
