In his book, Pertini writes of how he was born in the Italian city of Forli in the north of the country during the Fascist regime before being sent to an orphanage in Ethiopia. He was adopted by an Italian couple who renamed him Sandro. Pertini says his adopted parents instilled in him their passion for politics and literature and set him on a path to becoming a journalist and eventually a politician.
“I had no political background; I didn’t know anything about politics,” he says. “But I felt very strongly about something. I felt passionately about my country and its future.”
