He is the youngest of three brothers and two sisters. He also has another sister named Judy, who is a nurse. As a young boy, his family often visited a resort in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. He was a student of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and Surgery in Quezon City, Philippines. During his time there, he was a member of the university's team that won the University Athletic Association of Asia (UAAP) championship in basketball. In 1985, he graduated from the UP College of Medicine and Surgery with a degree in medicine.
In order to improve his chances of being chosen as a medical missionary for the Church, Kawilarang joined the LDS Church in 1986 at the age of 19. He was later called as a full-time missionary in the Philippines from 1987 to 1992. He has since returned to his home country as a medical missionary in Olongapo City, Zambales Province, Philippines from 2003 to 2004.
Alexander Evert Kawilarang (23 February 1920 – 6 June 2000, in Jakarta, Indonesia) was an Indonesian freedom fighter, military commander, and founder of Kesko TT, what would become the Indonesian special forces unit Kopassus. However, in 1958 he resigned his post as military attaché to the United States to join the separatist Permesta movement where he encountered Kopassus as his opponent. His involvement in Permesta damaged his promising military career, but he remained popular and active in the armed forces community.
