He is also a reformed alcoholic, having stopped drinking in 2010 when his son was born. He began attending AA meetings and was eventually involved in a 12-step recovery program that helped him maintain sobriety.
“In the beginning, I was very angry at my father, at the whole world,” he says. “But I was able to forgive him and understand that he had his reasons for doing what he did.”
Alessandri says he is not sure what caused his father to become abusive, but that he believes it was a combination of factors.
“His loneliness and his insecurities made him feel like a failure, so it was easier for him to blame everyone else,” he says.
