    Lazar Kaganovich was born on March 9, 1911. He died on January 17, 1982. He was a Russian geologist, politician and minister of heavy industry.

    He was born Lazar Moiseyevich Kaganovich. He was an extremely tough and ambitious person who served as the Soviet Minister of Heavy Industry for 18 years after Joseph Stalin’s death. He was the most powerful man in the Soviet Union during his lifetime. He held the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1952 to 1957. He was also the chairman of the State Planning Committee until 1967.

    His vice-chairman was Mikhail Suslov, his first secretary was Anastas Mikoyan and his second secretary was Vasily Pankin. Mikhail Gorbachev appointed him as the first Secretary of the Soviet Union’s Committee for State Security (KGB) in 1978.

    Lazar Kaganovich was born to a Jewish family in Bessarabia on March 9, 1911.

He is known for helping Stalin come to power and for his harsh treatment and execution of those deemed threats to Stalin's regime.
