He has been a long-time supporter of libertarian causes, and a supporter of Ron Paul, a libertarian congressman from Texas.

    He is a strong supporter of gun rights and is an advocate of the Second Amendment. He has been called a "gun nut" by some. In 1994, he was the only member of Congress to vote against Bill Clinton's gun control bill that was later signed into law. In 2009, he told a congressional committee that he would personally buy every gun in Washington DC if it were legally possible.

    He is a strong critic of the War on Drugs, and has been called a "drug warrior" by some. In 1995, he introduced a bill that would have criminalized drug use on federal land.

    William F. Buckley Jr. (1925-2008) was an American public intellectual and conservative author and commentator who in 1955 founded National Review, a magazine which helped to stimulate conservatism in the United States in the late twentieth century. Buckley also hosted Firing Line, a long-running public affairs show, from 1966 to 1999, interviewing such figures as Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher amongst others.
