Uzun Hasan was a Turkish military leader and statesman who became the 98th Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire.
As a military leader, Uzun Hasan was a skilled and charismatic commander. In 1514, he defeated the forces of the Persian khanate of the Lurs, as well as those of the Karamanids. In 1517, he led Ottoman forces to capture Baghdad from the Persian Sultan Ibrahim Lodi on behalf of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt. After this victory, he was offered the rulership of Egypt, but declined it and requested instead to be named sultan and given military command over Anatolia and the Caucasus. He was also offered the rulership of Persia but declined it as well.
As a statesman, Uzun Hasan is remembered as a charismatic leader and statesman. According to legend, his love for his country and people moved him to tears when he saw them suffering from the plague. He is thought to have saved many lives by promising to end the plague that had ravaged the country.
Uzun Hasan or Uzun Hassan (1423 – January 6, 1478) (Azerbaijani: اوزون حسن, Uzun Həsən}; Turkish: Uzun Hasan, where uzun means "tall"; Persian: اوزون حسن) was the 9th shahanshah of the Oghuz Turkic Aq Qoyunlu dynasty, also known as the White Sheep Turkomans, and generally considered to be its strongest ruler. Hasan ruled between 1453 and 1478, and would preside over the federations' territorial apex, when it included parts or all of present-day Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Transcaucasia and Syria.
