Pompey was a Roman general and statesman who served under Julius Caesar and was a central figure in the Roman conquest of the east.

    Pompey was a successful military commander and a man of integrity who tried to restore Roman rule over the east while maintaining Roman republican values. Pompey was also a man of great political ability and a great orator. In 61 BCE, Pompey was assigned to defend Greece against the Seleucid Empire army led by Ptolemy. He lost many battles but managed to defeat Ptolemy at the naval battle of Diaspora in 58 BCE. However, he was defeated by the Romans at Pharsalus in 48 BCE. The defeat did not deter Pompey from continuing his campaign eastward. Pompey managed to defeat the east Roman forces led by Seleucus I in Syria and captured Jerusalem for Rome in 63 BCE. While he was in the east, he was accused of treason by Julius Caesar.

    Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius (c. 67 – 35 BC), also known in English as Sextus Pompey, was a Roman military leader and politician who throughout his life upheld the cause of his father, Pompey the Great, against the dictator Julius Caesar and his supporters, during the last civil wars of the Roman Republic. He formed the last organized opposition to the Second Triumvirate, in defiance of which he succeeded in establishing an independent state in Sicily for several years.
