Yaşar Gürbak is the son of Kübra Gürbak and Burçin Gürbak. His sister is Emine Gürbak, who is married to journalist and poet Hakan Aslan.
Yaşar Gürbak was born in İzmir, Turkey. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in İzmir and continued his studies in London. He is also a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley in American Studies and Letters.
Gürbak's first published book was a collection of poems entitled "Kafkas" (1992). His first novel "Beş Baba" (1996) about the pain of the fatherless son was much acclaimed. His book "Yeni Ay" (2004) is based on the life of his friend and teacher, the painter Turgut Uyar.
His poetry has been translated into English by Ayla Seker, Uğur Alper, Kevser Öztürk, and Ahmet Özdemir.
