Wadjet is a feminine god of protection. Her name means “mother of all gods.”

In Egyptian mythology, she is the wife of Re, the creator god. Together they are the parents of Atum, the creator god of the universe.

Atum (Re-Atum) created the world from himself and his wife, Wadjet. The Nile River was born from their union.

She was also known as the “Eye of Horus.” She was seen as the protector of kings and pharaohs.

The Eye of Horus was Wadjet’s symbol of protective powers. She was often depicted as a woman with a cobra on her head, breasts and arms.

Egyptians believed she was the eye of Horus that protected the pharaoh and his family. Egyptians also thought she was a protector of their country and its people.

Wadjet was originally the ancient local goddess of the city of Dep.

Wadjet was said to be the matron and protector of Lower Egypt, and upon unification with Upper Egypt, the joint protector and patron of all of Egypt.

Wadjet was closely associated in ancient Egyptian religion with the Eye of Ra, a powerful protective deity.

As the patron goddess, she was associated with the land and depicted as a snake-headed woman or a snake—usually an Egyptian cobra, a venomous snake common to the region.
