Story
Kirito and Asuna are both members of SAO's clearing group, where they are the only two members not to have suffered any physical injuries. This is similar to how players of Sword Art Online are able to heal their wounds without the need for medics or equipment.
Early on in the game, Kirito tries to help Asuna after she collapses near the front gate. Later, he witnesses her getting stabbed by a black-armored enemy, and sprints to her side. After Asuna is fatally injured, Kirito is the only one who can extract her from the game immediately. He does so by forming a sword with his hand and using it to cut through her virtual body. He then pulls her out of the game by using his SAO avatar's sword as a rope. After this, he attempts to revive her, but she has already died. Kirito then collapses from grief over her death.
When the real world's day turns 24 hours, Kirito is first seen sleeping on a sofa with an empty bottle of wine next to him.
