Loyola was a Spanish Jesuit priest who founded the Society of Jesus in 1534. He was born at the village of Loyola, now in the province of Guipuzcoa, in the Basque country of southern Spain.
His father was a nobleman, who belonged to a branch of the Sanz family, which had settled in Loyola’s home town.
After early education at the Jesuit college at Saragossa, Loyola made his way to Paris where he studied for two years.
At twenty-two he went to Spain with a group of fellow students and was ordained priest in 1541.
In the next few years he travelled widely in southern Europe and in 1548, with twenty others, he set out for Venezuela.
He spent almost two years there and then went to Peru where he was based for twelve years. From there he returned to Spain and in 1559 was appointed Archbishop of Lima.
St Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) was a Spanish Basque Catholic Priest and theologian who co-founded the Catholic religious order, the Society of Jesus, nicknamed the Jesuits, becoming its first Superior General in 1541. He is known for composing the Spiritual Exercises, a set of meditations, prayers, and mental exercises, which form the basis of Jesuit spirituality to this day.
