"I'm a very private person," says Vera. "I'm a very organized person. I'm very focused on things that I have to do. I also have a tendency to be very blunt. I don't sugarcoat anything."
She was a natural leader in high school and college, where she was an accounting major and later worked as a financial analyst.
"I had a lot of friends in accounting, and it was just a great way to get my foot in the door," she says.
She quickly recognized that accounting was not the right career for her.
"I knew I wanted to start my own business when I graduated from college," she says.
She didn't want to work for someone else, though. She looked for other options, but couldn't find anything that appealed to her. One day she was flipping through the business section of the newspaper, and saw an ad for a start-up company that was looking for employees.
"I was like, 'That's the place I want to go,'" says Vera.
