Lily is a truly excellent example of a “movie triangle” character: she’s a goody-goody, the nice sister; the bad girl, the mean girl; and “The Mother,” who’s the caring and nurturing one.
When I wrote about the film in my post on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I noted that it was a much more successful film than the recent Star Trek reboot. I noted that although I didn’t care for the movie, I liked it much more than I disliked the first Star Trek movie.
And what made it work was that although J.J. Abrams is not a director who does things “by the book” of classical film theory, he does pay attention to what has worked in film for decades. And, of course, he brings his own brand of modern blockbuster filmmaking to the material.
