Born on January 6, 1804, in Mexico City, Mexico, Cortez entered the world as a boy with a love for law and order. He was a member of a wealthy family that had been in generations of government service. His father, Mariano Ignacio Cortés, was a high-ranking official in the Mexican government. By the time he was 10, Cortez was already learning the laws of the land.
The young man’s love for learning and desire to be in the middle of things influenced his decision to become a lawyer. He studied law and followed his father into the civil service. He also worked with his uncle, General Francisco Xavier Cortés y Cuevas, as he oversaw the construction of the great Convention House in Mexico City.
Cortez entered politics after Mexico’s war of independence from Spain. He was a member of the Supreme Governing Council and the Mexican Congress. After the war, he became one of the richest men in Mexico. In 1832, he was appointed a member of the Mexican Senate.
Cortez was known for his sharp wit and a brilliant mind.
