Claire was born in the UK and lived with her mother in a four-bedroomed house in a posh part of London. Claire’s mother hid her from her father, and because she was so young she barely knew him or his family. She was put into care and went to various foster homes and residential homes. She remembers being in a children’s home when one of the nurses filmed her dancing. Her dancing was so graceful and natural, and the film was shown on TV. She would watch it over and over again. She knew then she wanted to become a dancer.
Claire’s mother was unstable and frequently left her alone, which meant that Claire had no idea where she was living at any given time, and it made it incredibly hard to maintain relationships with friends and family. Her childhood was full of trauma and confusion.
When Claire was eight years old, she went to live with her paternal grandfather, who lived in a flat in a housing estate in London.
