His first appearance is in the season premiere “The One Where Nothin’ Goes Right” (S01E01). He is introduced as a network executive, who has come to Los Angeles to set up a new branch office. He states that he needs to stay at the office to “get his feet wet”, but he also mentions that he has brought along some trickery to help him get along with the locals. He is first seen floating in an elevator. When he gets off, he makes his way past the reception desk, and walks straight into the office of Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), who are waiting for him to arrive.
When the couple gets off the elevator, they are shocked to see someone floating in front of them. This is Dr. Emmerich, who tells them that he is there to set up the new office.
