There is a rich tradition of humour in Eastern Europe and Russia, from the 18th century onwards, when the Russian and Ukrainian writers Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin and Nikolai Gogol were known for their satirical novels. The most prominent contemporary satirical writers include Mikhail Zadornov and Viktor Pelevin, who also directed a film satirising the Russia of Putin.
The humour of the region has long been influenced by the Orthodox Church, which has always had a significant presence in the region. The Slavophile movement in literature and art had a large influence on the development of Russian humor, with the philosopher Alexander Afanasyev (1839–1916) and the writers Nikolai Ostrovtsev (1854–1906), Dmitry Merezhkovsky (1863–1941), Viktor Nadezhdin (1856–1903), and Ivan Kramskoy (1866–1902) being some of the most notable representatives. When Alexander III came to power in 1881, there was a great upsurge in humor in Russia, particularly among the intelligentsia.
