    Jihadist

Jihadist is an Arabic word meaning struggle or struggle against the enemies of the religion. It has been used especially of resistance to the Indian occupation of Afghanistan or to the Turks during the period of the Ottoman Empire. A more specific meaning of the term is evoked by the subgroup of violent Islamist movements, which are opposed to Western culture and Western-influenced governments. The most prominent of these movements are Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Other more secretive Islamist organizations include the Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya (Gama’a) in Egypt, Hamas in Palestine, Hizb ut-Tahrir (Party of Liberation) in Indonesia, Harkat ul-Mujahideen (Charity of the Holy Warriors for Jihad) in Bangladesh, Al-Umar (The Upright Ones) in Somalia, and Ansar Dine (Supporters of the Faith) in Mali.

Jihad is a religious concept undertaken by some Muslim groups to establish an Islamic state based on the rule of Islamic law and to drive out non-Muslims from Muslim lands.
