Leontyne Saresh was born to a middle-class family in The Hague, Holland. She wanted to be a concert pianist, but her parents were not keen on the idea. Leontyne was sent to a local convent school, where she eventually discovered her talent for music.
She was 17 years old when she had her first major success. Leontyne won a scholarship for an international singing competition in Paris. Upon winning the competition she was given a solo spot at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm. She performed in more than ten operas throughout Europe and Asia, and was a regular guest at the Vienna Festival.
Leontyne Saresh changed her stage name to Leontyne Price from Leontyne Simms (her real name). She was 25 years old when she had her first major hit with It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World. It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World was written by Harry Belafonte and Leontyne Price.
