Birkhead was born in New York City, New York, the daughter of classical pianist and composer John Birkhead and dramatist and novelist Marguerite "Maggie" Birkhead. She is the sister of actress Emily Birkhead and the aunt of actress Charlotte Birkhead. She was raised in a family of artists and intellectuals. Her older brother is the composer and music critic John Birkhead, and younger brother is the film and television composer and musician Lou Birkhead.
Birkhead attended the Trinity School in New York City and then attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she majored in psychology. In 1981, she received a B.S. in Psychology from Trinity College. In 1983, she received a M.S. in Psychology from Fordham University.
