There are a couple of stage adaptations of Romeo and Juliet in which the play is being performed by the side characters of the movie version, who have to have different personalities because they live in an Alternate Continuity. In one, Mercutio is actually a nice guy who's just a little bit wild, but falls in love with Romeo's best friend's sister. The other, the star of the play is actually the Prince of Verona, who is completely different from the Prince of Mantua in the original play. Mercutio here is a rival to Romeo and a friend of Juliet, who is in love with Romeo and jealous of Juliet because she's prettier. Prince Verona here is actually the Prince of Mantua, who has no interest whatsoever in either Mercutio or Juliet.
