Estonia is a very driven and independent country, and has a very progressive outlook on gender roles – women are paid the same as men – and the majority of the population is secular – there are no state churches there.
This, combined with the fact that Estonians are generally physically weak and weakly built, means that Estonians are very useful as soldiers – although this doesn’t seem to have been the case historically.
However, it is not until the 18th century that Estonia becomes a major force in European affairs. This was due to their rivalry and conflict with Sweden and Russia, and their internal struggles with the Germanic and Slavic tribes respectively.
With the Russian Tsar Peter the Great, Estonia was able to regain its independence, but it was never able to fully conquer Sweden and Russia; and after the Russian Revolution, Estonia became part of the USSR as a result of the Treaty of Tartu (1920).
Estonian independence was regained in 1991, but has been hampered by the lack of natural resources to ensure an economically viable country.
